The stages of your journey in detail
Venice: UNESCO World Heritage Site
In the north-east of Italy lies the floating city – at least that's one of the many nicknames of Venice. The city sits in a lagoon and is literally "built on water".
The history of what is today a centre of business and tourism goes back to the time of the Etruscans. Today, St Mark's Square and any of the other 124 churches are particularly worth seeing.
Every visitor to Venice should also take a gondola ride through the canals – it's the best way to explore the city.
Bologna: The learned, the red, the fat
Bologna lies in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. The city's roots go back to the 6th century BC, and in Italian it has the nicknames La Dotta, La Grassa and La Rossa – literally "the learned, the fat and the red".
Besides dramatic buildings such as the Basilica di Santo Stefano or the palaces along Piazza Nettuno, you should also pay attention to the city's museums. Particularly worth seeing are the Jewish Museum and the Museo della Storia di Bologna.
Florence: A city steeped in art history
A city shaped above all by the powerful Medici dynasty and by cultural giants such as Michelangelo and Da Vinci has left us its architectural and artistic highlights.
Florence is easy to explore on foot, and on a walking tour you'll learn everything you need to know about the city.
The city's landmark is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, which you can use to get your bearings. Before you leave the city, be sure to visit the Uffizi Gallery and stroll across the city's oldest bridge, the Ponte Vecchio.
Pisa: The Leaning Tower
Pisa's landmark is the Torre pendente di Pisa, better known as the"Leaning Tower of Pisa".
But this city in Tuscany, not far from the Arno river, has far more culture to offer than a not-quite-straight tower – such as the cathedral"Santa Maria Assunta".
Pisa's famous Pisan-Italian art is on display in numerous museums, for example the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo or the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo.
Siena: Art, culture and history
This city in the famous wine region of Tuscany is heaven on earth for all the wine lovers out there. Siena is another Tuscan city, yet it stands out from the others, as its medieval buildings give it a romantic atmosphere.
The Palazzo Pubblico is also worth seeing, and the square in front of it offers plenty of ways to enjoy the large Piazza del Campo, the big public square. From its tower, the Torre del Mangia, you get the best view over Siena.
Rome: The Eternal City
Particularly worth seeing are the Vatican and the Vatican Museums and, of course, the mighty Colosseum. You can also follow in the footsteps of the early Republic at the Roman Forum and enjoy an unforgettable view over the city from Castel Sant'Angelo.
Naples: At the foot of Vesuvius
Naples is Italy's third-largest city. This city of over a million people lies on the west side of the "boot" and is the capital of Campania.
This city is said to be the birthplace of pizza. Its skyline is shaped by the three fortresses Castel dell‘ Ovo, Castel Nuovo and Castel Sant’Elmo, among others.
Visitors to the city shouldn't miss the Duomo San Gennaro, the Basilica di Santa Chiara and the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte.
Capri: The pearl of the Gulf of Naples
Very close to Naples lies the impressive rocky island of Capri. Its history goes back to the Palaeolithic era.
The highlight of them all, which draws thousands of tourists to the island every year, is the Blue Grotto. Visitors to Capri can also look forward to numerous caves, picturesque villages and, for example, the glamorous Marina Grande.
You'll get the most breathtaking view over the island's ten square kilometres from Monte Solaro, the highest mountain on Capri.
Positano: Colourful town on the Amalfi Coast
On the south coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula, in the west of Italy, lies the small town of Positano. During the Second World War, this town on the Amalfi Coast was a refuge for artists and writers from all over the world; today it's mainly tourists who enjoy its beauty.
Particularly worth seeing are the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its Black Madonna and the Grotta dell’Incanto. Before you wrap up your trip to Italy, treat yourself to a day on the beach, where Positano nestles perfectly into the mountains.
