The stages of your journey in detail
Amsterdam: between tulips and the Red Light District
Amsterdam is famous for its flair. The mix of historic buildings, hip neighbourhoods and cosy little lanes gives the city its well-known atmosphere. With the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam is a fascinating destination for art lovers.
Amsterdam is easy to explore on a canal cruise. The popular floating flower market is another of the city’s landmarks, as is the world-famous Red Light District.
For a tour of the Red Light District, the Prostitution Information Center offers fantastic guided tours led by a former sex worker. Few questions are off limits, and you’ll learn about the history and the laws behind the windows. Ask here about a tour.
Antwerp: world capital of the diamond trade
For 500 years, this Belgian port city has been the world’s most important trading centre for diamonds. The famous Diamond District is the perfect place to buy one of these gems – or maybe just to dream about one as you stand at the shop window.
With the Rubens House and the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp also has attractions for smaller budgets. The Grote Markt is an impressive square lined with splendid 16th- and 17th-century guildhalls. It’s also packed with cafés and restaurants, and in winter there’s a Christmas market.
Lille: France’s best-kept secret city
France’s northernmost city was named European Capital of Culture in 2004. Lille often flies under the radar, mainly because of its big neighbour Paris, but it has a lot to offer!
Lille’s citadel was built in the 17th century and, because of its size, was once considered a small town in its own right. Today the city is home to the country’s second-largest art museum, the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
On the first weekend in September, Lille hosts Europe's biggest flea market. But don't worry if you're not there in September – there are still weekly markets where you can stock up on local cheese, wine and meat.
One treat to look out for is the gaufre fourrée, a wafer-thin waffle filled with vanilla cream. It’s been around for more than 250 years. Enjoy!
Paris: the city of love
Paris is one of the most popular destinations in the world and simply has to be part of this Interrail route. The city of love has so many sights that you could spend weeks there without seeing everything.
The Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame Cathedral are the city’s best-known landmarks. The Louvre houses the largest art collection in the world, including Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting, the Mona Lisa.
The Champs-Élysées are perfect for a stroll and some window shopping – or a proper shopping spree, depending on your budget. Other attractions include the Catacombs, Sacré-Cœur and a day trip to Versailles.
The Palace of Versailles and all the city's other attractions are easy to reach by train or metro. There's no better way to end a tour of Europe than in Paris.
