Good to know

The best time to travel to Mexico

The best time to travel to Mexico is the drier season from December to April. Even though this is the country's peak season, you'll avoid the hurricane season on both coasts. Mexico is a long country with a huge variety of landscapes. From mountain regions with snow-capped volcanoes to desert, jungle and coastline, each region has different weather and loads to do and see! Whether you want to go whale watching, diving, mountain biking, hiking, surfing or jungle trekking, or simply watch the butterfly migration – there's always a season to visit Mexico.

If you're coming just for the train journey, May to June and September to November are the best months to ride the famous El Chepe train, which offers views of the Copper Canyon in bloom at that time. Wonderful festivals and holidays you shouldn't miss include Semana Santa, Cinco de Mayo and Día de Los Muertos, as well as the spring and autumn equinoxes at Chichen Itza.

Bear in mind that July and August are the hottest months across the whole country and are often considered the tourist low season, but you'll often find discounts during this time. March and April tend to be more expensive due to the influx of spring breakers and beach holidaymakers, but they offer the best weather thanks to the lower heat index and lower humidity.

  • High season: December – April
  • Low season: July – August
  • Hurricane season: June – November
